- Mushrooms: If you don’t have shiitake, oyster or button mushrooms work just fine.
- Wontons: You can use shrimp, veggie wontons, or even regular dumplings.
- Broth: Want something lighter? Try miso or vegetable broth instead.
- Teriyaki Sauce: No teriyaki? Just mix soy sauce with a little honey.
- Chili Crisp: For heat, you can use sriracha or gochujang.
- Toppings: Add a nice finishing touch with peanuts, fresh cilantro, or a soft-boiled egg.
Ingredients – Chicken Wontons with Spicy Sauce:
3 tbsp sesame oil (split into portions)
oz shiitake mushrooms, sliced
- 1 garlic clove, grated
- 12 oz frozen chicken wontons (mini chicken cilantro ones work great)
- 1 to 2 cups chicken broth (use more if you like it soupier)
- 1/2 cup teriyaki sauce
- 1 to 2 tbsp chili crisp (adjust to taste)
Toppings:
- Sliced green onions
- Sesame seeds
Instructions
- Step 1: Cut Up Your Vegetables.
- I like shiitake mushrooms (for flavoring the brothy goodness) and green onions (for topping). I’ve also loved the versions I’ve made with either spinach or bok choy!
- 2. Add the frozen wontons, chicken broth, and teriyaki sauce. Simmer for 5 minutes, with a lid on, until the wontons are heated through.
Step3: Finish it off with the remaining 2 tablespoons of sesame oil and a spoonful of chili crisp. Sprinkle some sesame seeds
Step 4: Time to Serve!
empty everything into bowls, add your favorite garnishes like green onions and sesame seeds, and enjoy every bite while it’s hot!
Chef’s Notes
- Using quality wontons makes the final dish taste better and feel more enjoyable. Mini chicken and cilantro wontons are great, but sometimes you should try shrimp or vegetables, too.
- Be careful not to put too many mushrooms in the pan to allow them to brown gradually and taste their best.
- Add more broth to get a soupy meal or less broth if you want a thicker sauce.
- at the final stages of cooking so it remains both fragrant and fresh.
- Add fresh toppings like sliced green onions, sesame seeds, peanuts, or even a soft-boiled egg for extra texture and nutrition.
- Want a vegetarian version Use veggie or mushroom wontons and swap the chicken broth for vegetable or miso broth.
- Serve it right after cooking to enjoy the soft wontons and fresh flavors at their best.
